Let’s play a game of Truth or Dare. I’ll go first.
Truth: Chase Padgett and Stacey Hallal's musical sketch comedy adventure, Joyride, is amazing and you need to see it.
Ok. Your turn. Dare? I DARE you to go to the Curious Comedy Theater this Friday or Saturday at 8pm to see their show.
Bonus: I’ll be performing in the opening improv set on Saturday night.

If you are in Portland, OR, you should go see this show. If you are not in Portland, OR, you should get on a train, plane, or mythical flying creature of your choice, and go see this show.

Stacey Hallal, the most talented comedian I know, and Chase Padgett, like the second or third most talented comedian I know, teamed up to create an amazing sketch comedy show filled with music, adventure, and debauchery.

Tonight I am performing in an improv showdown tonight at the Curious Comedy Theater. I might get murdered.

curiouscomedytheater:

Real people, telling real stories. That’s what we do. Six storytellers, one theme, eight minutes each.

This month’s line-up: This January 23rd marks a fresh start to this year in storytelling. Temple Lentz (of Vancouver’s Anecdotal Evidence) and Kelley Tyner McAllister (of Campfire PDX) have joined forces to co-produce Campfire @ Curious. The opening show: Thursday, January 23rd, Curious Comedy Theater, $5, 8 pm, hosted by Temple Lentz.

Come join us for the compelling, the funny, the heartbreaking, and the absurd: real, personal stories on this month’s theme of “Fresh.” January storytellers are: Starr Ahrens, Jay Flewelling (winner of this month’s The Moth StorySLAM), Kelley Tyner McAllister, Lisa Miller, MaryAnn Rambo, Mark Saltveit and Scott Poole.

This is going to be a fun show.

The brilliant Jake Michels asked me to join him as a sub in his 2-person improv group, Balrog. We performed in a  comedy cage match style show called Friday Night Fights at the Curious Comedy Theater. We were given 17 minutes to perform and at the end of the night the audience would vote for their favorite team. (We won!)

What you can’t see is that on the right side of the stage is a clock counting down from 17 minutes. Knowing that will make a joke at the end of the show a lot funnier.

If you like Ender’s Game, this set has a lot of jokes you’ll enjoy.

Also, I don’t know what was up with my hair that night.

This is Stacey Hallal, the founder and artistic director of the theater I perform at, The Curious Comedy Theater. She is one of the most inspiring comedians I’ve ever worked with. Actually, she’s one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever known. I want to be like her when I grow up.

For a long time I thought the Willamette Week simply had a stand-up comedy problem. You couldn’t really fault them for having a stand-up comedy problem. They’re a fantastic newspaper, but even for fantastic newspapers the resources are stretched frustratingly thin. There just isn’t enough staff…

In 2006 I interned at Willamette Week. Bryon Beck, my internship “mentor” asked me what I’d be interested in writing about. I said the Portland comedy scene. He scoffed and said, “There’s no comedy scene in Portland.” Admittedly the Portland comedy scene in 2006 wasn’t what it is now, but there were shows happening every night of the week. Byron Beck is no longer with Willamette Week, but it seems that his ghost still is.

What people who don’t write don’t understand is that they think you make up the line consciously — but you don’t. It proceeds from your unconscious. So it’s the same surprise to you when it emerges as it is to the audience when the comic says it. I don’t think of the joke and then say it. I say it and then realize what I’ve said. And I laugh at it, because I’m hearing it for the first time myself. - Esquire

Learning improv is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. It has helped me in every aspect of my life. Even if you never intend to be a performer, use it to help you with job interviews, or handling crazy life experiences, or simply as a way to relieve stress.
