What is a meme?

The other day @MaudeApatow asked what a meme was on Twitter, so I made this video! (by mememolly)

It’s weird how Reddit (and other internet groups, but mostly Reddit) get so defensive about memes. Yeah, they’re often just vehicles for dumb jokes, but when you see universities run them into the ground with misuse and/or good old-fashioned bad humor, suddenly, they’re worth getting mad about, I guess?

I like how the Reddit user who created this thinks of himself, and the rest of Reddit, as Agent Smith, a mindless AI program here to destroy anything that brings instability to their simulated reality. Because that’s how I think of them too.

"You can’t “take down” a meme. Even if it were legally possible, it’s not technologically feasible. We have ironic pedophilia memes for fuck’s sake. Once it’s out there, it’s out there. Fighting against it’s just going to give you grief."
